I recently submitted a pull request to update the classic arcade top-down shooter Chromium B.S.U. on Flathub.

In Pull Request #8, I focused on modernizing the Flatpak build manifest, updating runtime dependencies, and ensuring compatibility with the latest Flathub standards.

To minimize testing friction and keep pipeline steps unified, using a consistent shell scripting environment across Linux and Windows runners is ideal.

One solution is configuring the Bash shell on Windows using GitLab Runner’s shell or Docker executor. You can see the implementation details in GitLab Runner Merge Request #3503.

Fixing GlusterFS Geo-Replication Failure on Fedora

GlusterFS geo-replication can fail on Fedora due to a missing dynamic library symlink.

To run Zabbix 3.0 with MariaDB 10.1 and PHP 5.6 (
php56u
), I built packages for EL6 on Fedora COPR:

To make it easy to use on Fedora, I packaged and published RPMs on Fedora COPR:

To enable the repository and install:

However, this comes with one major hurdle: the default offline storage quota for web databases is a measly 6 MB, which you will exhaust almost immediately.

However, this creates a tricky issue when mounting on another Ubuntu machine.

During standard installation with LUKS + LVM encryption, Ubuntu names the root volume group
ubuntu-vg
. If you plug in a secondary drive where Ubuntu was also installed, LVM encounters a name conflict between the host’s volume group and the external disk’s volume group, preventing activation.

Shrinking VMs on virt-manager / KVM

I use
rsync
to back up my workstation, including virtual machine disk images.
When clicking on a status tray icon and moving the mouse cursor diagonally down toward the open menu, focus would inadvertently switch to the next adjacent tray icon.
Unity

Unity makes a fine netbook interface, but tablet support feels underdeveloped. After configuring auto-login, I was greeted by the standard desktop and launcher. However, launching an application and maximizing it hides the dock launcher entirely, making it awkward to bring back with a finger. Furthermore, scrollbars are difficult to grab, and multi-touch gestures like drag-to-scroll aren’t yet implemented. Aside from those tablet friction points, the interface shows potential.

Not So Mad Over Donuts: Review of a Disappointing Experience

“You can have any color you want, as long as it’s black.” That seems to be the philosophy at Mad Over Donuts.

Most power management is handled by UPower, with backlight brightness being a key exception. Backlight is managed at the session level by
gnome-settings-daemon
via its power plugin using XRandR or standard
sysfs
, depending on hardware and driver support.

To read screen brightness over D-Bus:

gdbus call --session \

--method org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power.Screen.GetPercentage

Why bother with this? On a tablet device (such as the WeTab), brightness settings were buried deep in system menus and cumbersome to reach. With the custom GNOME Shell brightness extension (download archive), you can adjust screen brightness directly from the top bar. This requires patching
gnome-settings-daemon
to emit the
Changed
signal (GNOME Bug 658493).

Linux and the Desktop

It’s been a blast—Linux on the desktop never ceases to amaze me.

Here is a curated list of highlights that I find particularly useful on an EL6 workstation:

Core System & Filesystems

Boot & Graphics

Plymouth: Smooth graphical boot flicker-free animations (Plymouth)

Kernel Mode Setting (KMS): Native resolution and smooth transitions during boot (KMS)

Xorg 1.7:

nouveau
open-source driver for NVIDIA cards (Nouveau)

Desktop & Multimedia

It came preloaded with Windows Vista, along with an optional upgrade to Windows 7 available on request. The convertible laptop is heavy, has abysmal battery life, and heats up faster than a toaster.

On the positive side, the tx2 is relatively compact with its 12" display, easy to carry around, includes an optical drive (which I still use occasionally), and features mostly Linux-compatible hardware. The touchscreen works under Linux, although I’ve currently misconfigured something there.

xchat-gnome 0.26.2

I am currently one of the maintainers of
xchat-gnome
and am working steadily toward releasing version 0.26.2. So long, spatial mode!

In Fedora 13, Xorg now relies on
udev
rather than
hal
for automatic hardware detection.

Bonus note: I noticed Totem now remembers the last-played playback position.

Fedora and GNOME keep getting better with time.

Duplicate Emails in Evolution

Troubled by duplicate emails in your Evolution inbox?

You need the
remove-duplicates
plugin! It slices, it dices, and it comes complete with its own patch set and Makefile.

Currently, upstream is tracking this effort here:
GNOME Bug 587011 – evolution-kill-bonobo unable to build remove-duplicates

Android on Fedora

Samsung will soon be launching the Galaxy in our market (an Android-based phone). Android looks very attractive to me because of its open, developer-friendly ecosystem. If you wonder why not an iPhone, I am inherently biased toward Linux—check out the discussion on Reddit for a deeper comparison.

To get started, I downloaded the Android 1.6 SDK and followed the installation instructions.

While installing the Eclipse ADT plugin, you might encounter dependency errors like this:

Samsung Omnia HD (GT-i8910)

In short, this phone is frustrating—at least to me.

Really Annoying

Buggy default firmware: The stock web browser crashes whenever you hit “Stop.”

Wi-Fi limitations: WPA Enterprise Wi-Fi connection is poorly supported.

VPN: Setting up a VPN is a major pain.

Bluetooth transfers: Any files or data received via Bluetooth are dumped directly into the SMS inbox and cannot be saved straight to a folder without a third-party file manager.

Calendar widgets: Birthdays and appointments aren’t displayed on the home screen at least 24 hours in advance.

Locked down: The platform is not developer- or hack-friendly.

Customer support: Samsung’s sales and support teams are unhelpful.

Windows-only SDK: Developing on Linux is a major hassle compared to Android.

Accessories: Phone cases and screen protectors are nearly impossible to find.

Contacts UI: Photo contacts are displayed as hover icons rather than clean thumbnails.

Home screen: The 3D home screen navigation isn’t configurable.

Audio formats: No Ogg Vorbis or FLAC support out of the box.

Adobe PDF viewer: Terrible user interface lacking fullscreen support (Picsel Viewer is much better).

Keyboard layout: On the alphanumeric keyboard, the “OK” button sits in the top-left corner, requiring an awkward reach.

Mildly Annoying

Opera has not yet been released for S60v5.

The phone needs to be hacked (via HelloOX2) to install unsigned applications.

No centralized app store, apart from Nokia’s Ovi Store and the Samsung App store (which lacks S60 apps).

Lacks smooth kinetic scrolling across many list views.

The Pros

Built-in GPS and A-GPS.

Gorgeous, large AMOLED screen with auto-brightness, easily readable in broad daylight.

Responsive accelerometer with auto-orientation.

Proximity sensor automatically turns off and locks the screen during calls.

Intuitive and natural-feeling scrollbar.

Great HD games available from Gameloft.

Sports Tracker (from Nokia) is a fantastic fitness utility.

Built-in podcast support.

RoadSync support for connecting to corporate Microsoft Exchange email.

Route 66 navigation works well and outperforms Google Maps offline.

Support for P.I.P.S. and the Qt runtime.

Native hardware support for high-quality DivX and FLV video playback.

Quickoffice and Office Reader allow viewing MS Office and OpenDocument files.

Support for multiple custom alarms and multiple timezone clocks.

Native ZIP file extraction out of the box.

MTP support.

Excellent built-in dictionary and business card scanner.

Here is the longer story.

The Modem

The ISP-provided modem is a DNA A211. By default, it uses
admin
/
admin
credentials, and the web management console is accessible over Wi-Fi!

It appears to run a Linux 2.6.8 kernel, likely with a GNU-based userland stack. However, I haven’t been able to locate the GPL source code published anywhere on their website.

The modem requires a daily reboot to maintain a stable internet connection—I still haven’t figured that one out.

xchat-GNOME Fullscreen

You love chatting over IRC, IRC is life, and you need your IRC client to support fullscreen mode! Look no further:
xchat-gnome
requires only a trivial patch to support fullscreen.

Fedora 11 configures non-root packaging by default. On other systems, create a
.rpmmacros
file in your home directory with the following line:

Duh! To receive files from a phone or other Bluetooth-enabled device to a laptop running Linux, make sure to enable the “Receive files in Downloads folder over Bluetooth” option in GNOME File Sharing Preferences.

Notes: Bluetooth on Fedora

SQLite vs. libgda

A few things I have learned:

DDL (Data Definition Language) varies significantly from one SQL implementation to another.

It is much easier and faster to maintain an application for a single database backend rather than across many.

libgda
is great when you are designing an application specifically meant to manage arbitrary databases.

libgda
is overkill when all you need is to maintain a simple, local embedded database.

SQLite is fast, lightweight, well-documented, and backed by an active IRC support community.

Keep database-related code restricted to as few source files as possible.

The SQLite source code is an excellent reference for understanding how to implement commands like
.import
.

Using Git (or any modern version control system) saves an enormous amount of time.

To build it yourself, download the latest snapshot from the Linux kernel git staging tree using the “snapshot” link.

Once downloaded, extract the archive and append the following line to the
Makefile
:

obj-m := rt2860sta.o

Then run the command below to compile and install the module:

Linux Hosts That Use the evdev Driver for Keyboards Do Not Map Keys Correctly in Any Guest in VMware

Some of the newer Linux distributions use Xorg 1.4, where the new
evdev
driver manages all input devices, including keyboards. The
evdev
driver causes the keyboard to send different keycodes. For example, the down arrow sends keycode 116, which other drivers interpret as Win+R. Consequently, keyboard mapping problems occur in all guest operating systems running in VMware.

This came from xchat-gnome (via the sound-notification plugin). It turns out
gnome_sound_play
was being used to play the sound, which defaults to the ESD backend:

gnome_sound_play("../../data/message.wav");

ESD has been superseded by PulseAudio in most major distributions. I would prefer moving to a GStreamer-based backend, so I rewrote the code to use GStreamer. However, the ping still didn’t work while I was playing music through Totem.

xchat-gnome: Unchecking "Mark as Away" Does Not Work

Ticking “Away” worked like a charm on xchat-gnome, but unticking it didn’t do any magic.

A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
