Samsung will soon be launching the Galaxy in our market (an Android-based phone). Android looks very attractive to me because of its open, developer-friendly ecosystem. If you wonder why not an iPhone, I am inherently biased toward Linux—check out the discussion on Reddit for a deeper comparison.

To get started, I downloaded the Android 1.6 SDK and followed the installation instructions.

While installing the Eclipse ADT plugin, you might encounter dependency errors like this:

Cannot complete the request. See the details.
Unsatisfied dependency: ... org.eclipse.equinox.p2.iu/org.eclipse.wst.xml.core/0.0.0
Unsatisfied dependency: ... org.eclipse.equinox.p2.iu/org.eclipse.wst.sse.core/0.0.0
Unsatisfied dependency: ... org.eclipse.equinox.p2.iu/org.eclipse.wst.xml.ui/0.0.0
Unsatisfied dependency: ... org.eclipse.equinox.p2.iu/org.eclipse.wst.sse.ui/0.0.0

To resolve these (per instructions from Android SDK on Fedora 10):

  1. Enable the “Eclipse Ganymede updates repository” under Help -> Software Updates -> Available Software -> Manage Sites, then check Ganymede Update Site.
  2. Search for “WST Common UI”, check it, and click Install.

Once completed, you can install the ADT plugin (this might take a few moments).

I also tested the Android Emulator, which automatically picked up my host internet connection and worked smoothly.
